What is a Dog Potty tray?
Why we use Potty Trays with our puppies?
When you have tiny puppies, you have to have a place in their pen for them to go potty. In the olden days breeders used newspaper. But what a mess the pen would be! Puppies walked right through the Pee and poop. Later, plastic Pee Pads were developed. These were a bit better than newspaper but they are still messy and very dangerous. Puppies can tear them to pieces and ingest the plastic. Finally people got smart and dog potty solutions came onto the market.
There are many dog potties on the market. We use the UGODOG potty which is no longer available for purchase. I have a link for a nice alternative above. (also see Puppy Supplies page) or make your own Potty Tray using the substrate that your puppy will be using when he is outdoors. For instance, if your puppy will potty on the grass, use Cat litter pan and line it with real grass sod. The puppy will learn early to potty on the grass. If your puppy will potty on cement then use a cement slab in the litter pan. Just be careful that you don't use a substrate that your puppy may want to put in his mouth and possibly ingest. (It would not be safe for a puppy to have mulch or gravel in his pen)

Here are the advantages of the Plastic Potty trays
for short term use by most of us....or long term use by apartment dwellers or the disabled and elderly.
1) Bacteria Free – our indoor dog potty system has a unique plastic design that makes daily clean up easy and of course, keeps it bacteria free. Pee Pads may leak and artificial grass products are difficult to clean so bacteria can flourish.
2) Easy To Clean – the two grate system in the UGODOG dog potty system can be cleaned with a wet town or in a sink (how easy is that!). Compared to pee pads (which dogs can shred) and grass dog pottys (which require a hose and scrubbing to clean), there’s just no easier indoor dog potty system than the UGODOG product.
3) Cost Effective – because the UGODOG indoor dog potty is created with the highest quality materials it will last so you would most likely only purchase it once. With 2 sizes to choose from, the prices range from $49.95 to $99.95. You probably didn’t know that the average dog owner spends about $400.00 per year on pee pads and that the average cost for a grass indoor dog potty product is about $150.00. Compare these costs to the UGODOG indoor dog potty and it’s a no brainer!
4) Dry Paws – The unique convex shaped grates in the UGODOG dog potty product allows urine to pass through the grates and it then collects in the base so your dog’s paws remain dry. It’s easy to see that with pee pads and with the artificial grass potty systems, that simply is not the case. So, keep your dog from tracking urine throughout the house!

Potty Tray Trained Pups
The Potty Tray at the Breeders:
Our puppies begin using the Potty Tray as soon as they can walk. The Potty Tray is in the puppy pen as soon as the puppies are able to climb onto it. The Potty Tray keeps the puppies pen super clean because there is a grate, so the puppies do not walk through the urine. We also have several Potty Tray is available that we can wash them as soon as they become soiled. It is important to us to keep every puppies paws clean, so the whole litter is clean..
Weather permitting, we also will begin a schedule for your puppy to begin outdoor potty training at 6 weeks of age. We begin taking the puppies outside every few hours when they are strong on their feet. Most people will want to graduate their puppy to going potty outside. The sooner you start a schedule for your puppy, the sooner he will learn to go outside. But there are many people who need to use a Potty Tray for a lot longer. During the worst of winter, a Potty Tray is very useful for a puppy. Also apartment dwellers find this tool invaluable.
The Potty Tray at the Puppies New Home:
When you bring your puppy home, your puppy will be accustomed to using the Potty Tray for his potty spot. It is important that you confine your puppy to a small pen with his Potty Tray potty. Confining your puppy to a small pen will give him a sense of security and he will have less anxiety in his new home. It is normal that the puppy will be very quiet the first several days. It is important to not over handle your puppy during this time of adjustment. He has to know it is OK to be away from his litter mates. If you hold him too much, he will cry when you are not with him...and you want to sleep at night! Slowly over the weeks you can enlarge his play area ....as long as you do this slowly, your puppy will not have accidents outside of the Potty Tray.
Do not allow your puppy to roam the house all at once. Again his area of freedom must be increased slowly. If you give your puppy a large area to run, and he has an accident, then you must confine him once more, and watch him more closely next time....so he does not begin bad habits.
Here is a Blog post that I wrote that describes how we started our Potty Schedule for the outdoors after using the Potty Tray indoors for the first several weeks.

Outdoor Potty Training:
The Potty tray used short term should not make outdoor potty training more difficult. I have found that as long as you start an outdoor schedule early the puppy prefers to use the outdoors. You may even begin a Potty Training Schedule for the outdoors as soon as you bring your puppy home. Continuing to use a Potty TRAY with your puppy at home is optional! However, it is very helpful for the apartment dweller. Because your puppy has been use to a designated potty spot, they are very easy to potty train for a designated spot outdoors as well.. We always take our puppies outside as often as possible so our puppies are comfortable going potty outdoors as well.
Night time and the Potty Tray:
The Potty Tray is very helpful with a new puppy during the night. An 8 week puppy is not able to hold his bladder all night long. If he does not have access to his Potty Tray he will cry to relieve himself. You must keep his bed near the UGODOG so he can have access to a potty spot at night. If he has access to his potty tray, the puppy is less likely to disturb your sleep. If you do not use a UGODOG at night, there is a good chance your puppy will cry to be taken out to the potty.. That is OK too. If you would rather take your puppy outside in the night, that is another good option.
The Potty Tray for people who work
For people who work, the Potty TRAY is a real life saver. As long as you confine your puppy to a safe area during the day, you do not need to come home during the day to take your puppy to the potty. I do recommend that you plan to spend the first week at home with your puppy.
The Potty Tray for apartment dwellers
For people who live in an apartment, The Potty Tray allows them the ability to train a puppy to potty on an outdoor balcony, or in a bathroom UGODOG. This is much more practical than trips down the elevator.
Fresh Patch
Real Grass shipped to you in a box!
Fresh Patch is the absolute best way to potty train your puppy. Use Fresh Patch in place of a potty tray in your puppy pen. The puppy learns to potty on grass from the day you bring your puppy home and he/ she is less likely to have potty accidents. I especially recommend Fresh patch for apartment dwellers. You can put the Fresh Patch on your balcony. They cost $27.55 when you order repeat shipping. Most people choose to have it delivered every 2 weeks. I think it is a fantastic idea. It may be a bit pricey...but if it helps your puppy potty train faster, and not soil your rugs....that seems pretty worthwhile!
